EDUCATIONAL/DAY PROGRAMS
The West Central Illinois Special Education Cooperative operates a program in the nearby middle school to meet the needs of our residents who are 22 years of age and younger. This program, called SPARKS, is designed specifically to meet their physical, medical, and educational needs. It is an integrated program which includes physical, occupational, and speech therapies, a sensory room, an area for receiving necessary treatments and medical care, and various adaptive equipment for positioning and activities.
Once graduated from the school program, our residents begin attending the Fulton County Rehabilitation Day Training Program, also located here in Canton. FCRC is a long-standing service to individuals with developmental disabilities with a leadership team determined to provide quality programming and care for their consumers. Activities range from live music weekly to arts and crafts to community outings. FCRC also provides on site nursing for medical needs, and licensed direct care staff for ADL cares.
The small town of Canton, Illinois has embraced our population with open arms, from building a specialty school based solely on their needs, to naming them honorary baseball team members to inviting them to holiday events and parties. We are truly a part of this community and our individuals benefit greatly from this inclusion.
SENSORY STIMULATION
Due to our individual’s cognitive and processing deficits, consistent exposure to auditory, visual, olfactory, and tactile stimulation is central to their continued development. It also adds to their quality of life. Our staff assist our residents in sensory integration to ensure their interaction with the environment and reduce isolation – especially for those with visual and auditory impairments.
Our sensory stimulation program includes the use of positioning devices, aromatherapy, massage, fiber optic lights, mirrors, music, and tactile adaptive devices.
RESPITE/VACATIONS
Sometimes, a family or caregiver needs a little help in caring for a child or adult with complex needs, or just a break from the day to day demands. This help may come in the form of a short-term respite stay. If you are planning a vacation, or just need some time to rest, we can help. Our respite program offers up to 14 days of residential care at a discounted private pay rate.
EMERGENCY ADMISSIONS/LOSS OF CAREGIVER
Here at Star Care, we work closely with state agencies such as the Department of Children and Families, Department of Specialized Care for Children, Independent Service Coordination’s, and Center for Youth and Family Solutions to provide emergency placement to children and adults with developmental disabilities who have suffered a loss of caregiver, or who have been removed from a home environment. This is typically a full admission to our program with the end goal being for the individual to return home when help is in place, if possible.
Our Director of Residential Services and QIDP are experienced in all aspects of discharge planning, including assisting in obtaining home health services, home medical supplies, education and training for family/caregiver in g/j-tube care, trach care, medication administration, and activities of daily living.
We are more than happy to be here to provide residential services for as long as a family might need. And when the time comes for that family to take their loved one home, we are here to assist in every step of that process.
FUNDING FOR STAR CARE SERVICES
Funding is available for our residential services through Illinois Medicaid, Managed Medicaid, Private Insurance, and Private Pay. All admissions must be screened by Star Care’s Admission team, as well as an Independent Service Coordination office to qualify for admission.
Independent Service Coordination are offices maintained by the Illinois Department of Human Services for the purpose of providing services to individuals with developmental disabilities. In order for an individual to quality for funding to be admitted to Star Care, a screening by one of these offices is required to be completed.
For any questions on this process or how to get started, please feel free to call Starla LaFollette, DRS at 309-647-5631. She will be happy to guide you through the steps and answer any questions you may have.
SISTER PROGRAMS
Star Care also has the ability to assist adult individuals who currently reside in community-based homes, such as CILA centers, through our sister program, Renaissance CareSuites. This is a short-term rehabilitation program within the same building. In this program, we are able to provide skilled nursing and therapy to adults with a developmental disability who has an acute health issue, but who ultimately wishes to return home. Our staff are specially trained by our QIDP staff on specialty programming and adaptive behavioral supports specific to an intellectual disability, making CareSuites uniquely qualified to offer this service.
